Ronald G. Ungerer, MD, FCCP

Dr. Ungerer has practiced in Santa Barbara since 1984. He graduated from Princeton University cum laude with a degree in Biology in 1973. He attended the UCLA School of Medicine, graduating in 1977 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honorary Medical Society in his junior year. He completed his Internshsip and Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences from 1977-82, and was selected as Intern of the Year. At UCLA, Dr. Ungerer worked with Dr. Robert Wright throughout their residency, establishing a long term friendship and now practice partnership.

After completing his pulmonary training, Dr. Ungerer practiced for 2 years in San Luis Obispo, CA, before moving to Santa Barbara to join the Sansum Medical Clinic in 1984, and then joining Dr. Jeffrey Kupperman in private practice in 1998.

Dr. Ungerer is a member of the medical staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and was selected “Physician of the Year” in 2008. He has served in the past as Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Department and Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit.

He has an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and has been active in the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program At Cottage Hospital since 1984 and regularly selected for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Ungerer is board certified (ABIM) in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the American Thoracic Society, California Medical Association and Santa Barbara County Medical Society.

Dr. Ungerer is a native of Buffalo, New York. He is married with twin sons, Mark and Andrew. His wife, Stephanie, is an attorney and formerly served as a Deputy District Attorney and County Counsel. When not working, Dr. Ungerer is an avid skier, runner, hiker, and tennis player.
